In Caravaggio's 1601 masterwork, Christ is depicted at the very instant that he reveals his identity to two disciples upon rising after the crucifiction. There's much to admire here including the expressions and gestures and the symbolic still life of the meal, But all of it's power comes from the innovative way in which Caravaggio puts the viewer in a seat at the table, embracing him with the disciple's left arm reaching out of frame and the right arm of Jesus. Sublime. Local note. The Supper at Emmaus is currently on display at The Art Institute of Chicago, on loan from The National Gallery in London.
