Wednesday Edition

This is our studio site. Among lots of other things, we run Field Notes Brand,
go there right now and spend lots of money. Thanks.

A Presentation AT SXSW 08

Creative Relativity

What started out as a pseudo-scientific parody of pop-sci writing turned into a pseudo-scientific pop-sci essay. Oh well. Above is Jim's mostly cohesive presentation made in Austin at SXSW Interactive entitled "A General Theory of Creative Relativity." (Podcast)

A Formulaic Contest

Ignoring the gaping holes in Jim's argument, we asked our more algebraically inclined readers to propose a scientific formula that properly expresses the main tenets of the theory and then to explain their work.

Thanks for the entries. John Lewis and Justin Belcher will each receive Field Notes Brand Memo Books for their contributions and while we didn't initially plan to award a Grand Prize we really had to when we received the work of David Yeiser. Nicely done.

Download David's Spreadsheet.

About CP

We're Coudal Partners, a small creative studio in Chicago. We do lots of things beside making films. Jump over to our cover page to see what's new, or maybe check out The MoOM, our Museum of Online Museums.

Grab our blended RSS feed here. It includes all the freshest Fresh Signals and updates from this and various other sections of the site.

Hot Air Rises

In 2007, Jim and Brendan Dawes presented Making Your Short Attention Span Pay Big Dividends at SXSW.

Edward Lifson invited Jim over to the WBEZ studios for Sunday's Chicago Public Radio arts show Hello Beautiful! You can listen to it, or download it, here.

Also, here's Jim with type projected all over his face, giving a rambling presentation for the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada and here's the text and audio of the Opening Keynote at the 2006 SXSW Interactive Conference in Austin, from Jim and Jason Fried of 37signals.

A PDF from Print Magazine of a Steve Heller interview with Jim.
